According to "Generational Differences in the Workplace" by Trinet.com, Gen X individuals (born between 1965-1980) tend to be very independent and work best with minimal supervision. In contrast, Gen Z (born between 1995-2009) seeks fulfillment and a sense of purpose in their work; they want to do work that matters.
IN MY OPINION...
Let's take a moment to appreciate mothers. From conception, a mother's role begins. To produce a healthy baby, a mother must care for her body before and during pregnancy to stay strong and healthy for her child. The child receives all necessary nutrients through the mother. This nurturing continues throughout childhood and into young adulthood. As fathers, our role is to raise our children to be independent individuals; this is our responsibility.
As a Gen X parent, I found work and excelled at it, especially when left to my own devices. In raising our Gen Z children, I've observed that they don't necessarily seek out work but prefer clear instructions on when and how to work to be productive. This can be frustrating and perplexing when they don't take initiative. How can we parent the current generation effectively despite the thirty-year gap, without disabling their independence? If we don't instruct them, they may not act. What if we stop directing them? How will they learn to take initiative? Eventually, a child must be weaned. Determining the duration of the weaning process requires parental teamwork, but every team needs a leader. Fathers, it's your turn to step up to the plate with the bases loaded!
Happy Father's Day! Indeed, this journey is not without its challenges. There will be trials and errors, successes and failures, but the fundamental rule is to never quit. Giving up is not an option. This holds true even when they don't listen, when they reject your advice, or when they feel your guidance lacks value. Never quit! Never give up on your children, nor give them a reason to give up on you.
